HISTORY

Oviedo has a rich history. The area’s first inhabitants were the Timucua Native Americans who were part of the Seminole tribe. Just after the Civil War immigrants, former slaves and homesteaders came to the area to begin a new life. Originally called Solary's Wharf the area was renamed in 1879 by Swedish Immigrant, Andrew Aulin, who was appointed postmaster. Aulin renamed the area Oviedo after a town in northern Spain known for its beautiful architecture, art and landscape as well as the University Of Oviedo, an ancient cathedral dating back to the 8th Century well known for its education

In 1925, Oviedo had grown to a population of 800 and formally incorporated.

The area’s fertile land was cherished by the early settlers who worked grew crops of celery and citrus as well as timber mills and livestock. The proximity to Orlando by wagon road or steam ships and small boats on Lake Jessup allowed them export their produce and products easily.

COMMUNITY INFORMATION

Today, Oviedo looks very different than it did in 1925. Gone are the large produce production, timber and livestock industries and roads, housing developments, schools, shopping and other modern conveniences have taken their place.

Oviedo residents have a variety of recreation facilities to enjoy including a full aquatic center, gymnasium, basketball courts, racquetball and tennis courts,  two Olympic-sized swimming pools, skate center, soccer complex, baseball stadium, many parks, picnic pavilions, concession stands, equestrian facility complete with a show ring and conservation area.

The City of Oviedo hosts to two annual events that brings thousands to the area. "A Taste Of Oviedo" is in the Spring and in the Fall “Great Day In The Country".

Lending to the hometown feeling, Oviedo hosts a large chicken population that dates back to the early settlers. These chickens are in many breeds and colors. In the downtown area during the spring, you will find drivers obeying the many “chicken crossing signs” and allowing the baby chicks to cross the road with the hens.

REAL ESTATE

Oviedo is currently in a growth spurt. The City of Oviedo plans to expand downtown on approximately 50 acres with a new mixed use development called Oviedo on the Park which is currently under construction. The new development will feature single-family houses, town homes and apartments, a commercial business district and retail establishments. Oviedo on the Park is expected to be completed between 2012 and 2015.
