HISTORY

Maitland is one of the oldest incorporated municipalities in Central Florida therefore it is a city rich in history. The Seminole Indians once called the area Musk Mellon Place. The area became known in 1838 as Fort Maitland, named after Captain William Maitland, a hero of the Seminole Wars. What is now Maitland Avenue was once part of the Old Black Bear Trail which ran from Montreal, Canada to St. Petersburg, Florida, and passed right by the fort. After the Civil War, settlers came buying large tracts of land, clearing them and planting citrus groves. The first deed for property in the city was written in 1873 to George H. Packwood. Packwood built a large hall known as Packwood Hall that was used for town meetings and social gatherings; it was located where City Hall now is. The area also became known as a winter resort. Two presidents, Grover Cleveland and Chester Arthur enjoyed wintering here at times.

In the late 1870’s a railroad was constructed from Jacksonville to Maitland to export the citrus production. The town was incorporated in 1885 but shortly thereafter a series of yearly killing freezes wiped out the grove owners, fortunately the town’s visitors kept coming for the climate and the city was able to survive. Eventually the citrus crops recovered as well.

During the 1950’s Martine Marietta Corporation and the rest of the space age companies had it’s eye on the area and in the 60’s the area was buzzing with construction of supermarkets, restaurants, churches, and housing. Next came the arrival of Disney World in Orlando in 1971 and that also had a huge impact on Maitland’s growth. Growth has continued but a historical corridor has been established to keep its identity and tradition.
